+ Emphasis of Fair
Summer Programs:
As in years past, the students will be primarily interested in programs that offer community-based service work in the developing world.
Although we do have students interested in language and cultural immersion, or adventure-based programs, the majority of students will be looking for 2 to 6 week programs that will engage them in a community and afford them the chance to learn about issues and make genuine connections with the people in that community.
As one student said, “I don’t want a program that is designed to entertain me…”
We provide the information above so that you can decide if this fair is the best use of your travel budget and will be prepared to answer student questions.
Gap Year Programs:
There are currently 12 Hotchkiss students on a gap year, and there is general interest in gap years here (we have had 66 students go on gap years in the last five years). Our students do everything from travel to language study to volunteering to internships.
+ Logistics for Fair
The date of the fair is Tuesday, January 16, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. This is the part of the swing through CT schools that is advertised by Ginny DeConinck at Loomis Chaffee, but is as different date than what was originally advertised.
We will be having this fair at the start of our Uppermid (11th grade) parents’ college weekend, so there may be parents here on campus. For those of you offering gap years, this could be an especially good chance to speak with families.
You should plan to arrive by 9:15 a.m. and be set up by 9:30 a.m. as all the students are free following the all school meeting at 10:20 am and will be in the main hallway. If you would like to stay and have lunch in the dining hall, feel free to do so.
If you have had Hotchkiss students participate on previous programs, we strongly recommend that you pull together a list of those students to display on your table, or place in your materials. This will help you if prospective students can go and speak to past participants.
+ Fair Fee, Marketing, and Registration
The cost to send a representative is $125.00, which will be used to help fund scholarships for students and cover the costs of the fair. The cost for a “display only” is $50.00. Over the last eight years these donations have made it possible for several students to contribute to community-based service in the developing world.
Our goal is to provide you with well-informed, enthusiastic students who will make your visit worthwhile. There is a place on the registration form where you will be asked to submit a 50-75 word blurb describing your program (include your website). The information that you provide will be posted in a news item in our parent section of the site, and will be emailed out to students in the weeks leading up to the fair.
Register to attend the Fair by completing this Registration Form.
